HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, and A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor. HDMI is rapidly emerging as the connection standard for HDTV. Developed by Sony, Hitachi, Thomson (RCA), Philips, Matsushita (Panasonic), Toshiba and Silicon Image as the digital interface standard for the consumer electronics market, HDMI combines high-definition video and multi-channel audio in a single digital interface to provide crystal-clear digital quality over a single cable. One cable for audio and video dramatically simplifies home theater system installation and eliminates the cable mess behind entertainment system components. HDMI offers significant advantages over analog A/V connections, including the ability to transmit uncompressed digital video and audio content. The 19 pin HDMI cable delivers up to 5Gbps of bandwidth with a maximum signal delivery length of up to 15 meters.
HDMI supports RGB, 4:4:4 YCbCr and 4:2:2 YCbCr. Up to 24 bits per pixel can be transferred. For the 640x480 resolution, the RGB data has a range of 0-255. For YCbCr data and all other RGB resolutions, data has a range of 16-235 (16-240 for Cb and Cr; values less than 16 or greater than 235/240 may be occasionally present due to processing). Supports every uncompressed standard, enhanced and high definition video format ranging from 4801 to 480P, 720P, 10801 and 1080P as well as existing PAL formats.
Supports compressed audio formats such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS EX.. Driven by the DVD-Audio standard, audio support consists of 1-8 uncompressed audio streams with a sample rate of up to 48, 96 or 192 kHz, depending on the video format. It can alternately carry a compressed multi-channel audio stream at sample rates up to 192 kHz, up to 24-bits.
Supports Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) based on the AV.link protocol so it can be controlled with a universal remote that is used with multiple HDMI sources such as DVD players or satellite set-top boxes.

DVI stands for (D)igital (V)ideo (I)nterface. DVI is a new form of video interface technology made to maximize the quality of flat panel LCD monitors and high- end video graphics cards. It is a replacement for the P&D Plug & Display standard, and a step up from the digital-only DFP format for older flat panels. DVI is becoming increasingly popular with consumer electronic manufactures of LCD, Plasma, DLP display devices. PC based Video card manufacturers are now featuring both a VGA and a DVI output port.
There are three types of DVI connections:
DVI-D PinoutDVI-D - (True Digital Video), format is used for direct digital connections between source video (namely, video cards) and digital LCD, Plasma, DLP monitors. This provides a faster, higher-quality image than with analog, due to the nature of the digital format. All video cards initially produce a digital video signal, which is converted into analog at the VGA output. The analog signal travels to the monitor and is re-converted back into a digital signal. DVI-D eliminates the analog conversion process and improves the connection between source and display.
DVI-A - (High-Res Analog), format is used to carry a DVI signal to an analog display, such as a CRT monitor or an HDTV. Although some signal quality is lost from the digital to analog conversion, it still transmits a higher quality picture than standard VGA.
DVI-I Pinout
DVI-I - (he Best of Both Worlds), format is an integrated cable which is capable of transmitting either a digital-to-digital signal or an analog-to-analog signal, but it will not work transmitting a digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital signal. Like any other format, DVI digital and analog formats are non-interchangeable. This means that a DVI-D cable will not work on an analog system, nor a DVI-A on a digital system. Make sure that you know what format each part of your equipment is before you purchase any DVI cables. Only equipment with a DVI port labeled 'DVI-I' will accept both a DVI-D and DVI-A source signals.
The Digital formats are available in DVI-D Single-Link and Dual-Link as well as DVI-I Single-Link and Dual-Link format connectors. These cables send information using a digital information format called TMDS (transition minimized differential signaling). Single link cables use one TMDS 165Mhz transmitter, while dual links use two. The dual link effectively doubles the power of transmission and provides an increase of speed and signal quality; i.e. a single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1080, while a dual link can display a resolution of 2048 x 1536.
Dual Link Dual Link DVI supports 2x165 MHz (2048x1536 at 60 Hz, 1920x1080 at 85 Hz). A dual link implementation utilizes all 24 of the available pins.
Single Link Single Link DVI supports a maximum bandwidth of 165 MHz (1920x1080 at 60 Hz, 1280x1024 at 85Hz). A single link implementation utilizes 12 of the 24 available pins.
